Approaching Matmata it is easy to overlook the buzzing life just underneath the surface of the earth. A few above-ground homes (including a school) indicate this nearly surreal town. This is where the troglodyte dwellings are located – either sunk into the soft rock of the hillside or in pit-style construction into the ground. The main attraction is tours of these fabulously interesting yet aesthetically simple homes.

Three hotels have been constructed in these underground homes. Bear in mind that they offer more in terms of experience than luxury. For greater comfort, although higher prices, consider the more conventional hotels nearby. Thinking of hailing a taxi? You'll soon discover that many visitors consider camels to be a preferred method of transport around Matmata.

Troglodyte homes
The origin of these homes is known to date as far back as the first century BC. The pit-homes are built with rooms around a central courtyard. A tour of a private home gives a wonderful window into the lives of the inhabitants and holds more than a few wonders. Star Wars enthusiasts will enjoy visiting the location where the intergalactic café scene was filmed. Lunch in a troglodyte restaurant is a unique experience!
