  Places of Interest TOZEUR

TOZEUR
The oasis capital in Tunisia. Has an International airport with regular flights from Paris and domestic flights from Tunis 5 days a week.

Oasis
Highly enjoyable, especially when visited by horse-drawn carriage.

Sahara Zoo
Located inside the oasis. This zoo is of much lower standard than most Europeans are used to. There is however a Coca-Cola drinking camel that is of some amusement.

Dar Charait Complex

This is a nice place in Tunisia which is really worth going out of your way to visit.

The Dar Cherait complex is made up of three main venues; the Dar Cherait Museum, Dar Zaman and the One Thousand and One Nights path. Its visit is often organized to complement the program but not as a main activity.

The fascinating Dar Cherait museum, housed in a restored mansion, has an extensive collection of pottery, antiques and rooms set up as replicas of scenes from traditional Tunisian life - past and present. Wander about these beautiful scenes richly decorated to show the bedroom of the last bey, a palace scene, a typical kitchen and a Bedouin tent.

The One Thousand and One Nights path has displays telling the tales of Sheharezad's world famous legends.

The visit to this museum has enormous value only when culturally interpreted by a top-rate guide.

Dar Zaman
is an elaborate visualization using artifacts, wax figures and text to interpret 3000 years of Tunisian history. Best for Guests interested in history.

Old City
A delightful and compact medina referred to as Ouled el Hadef. Unique locally traditional architecture uses bricks in relief to create patterns.

Ong El Jemal
A 40 min drive from Tozeur by 4WD, this natural outcrop of rock, called Oung El Jemal, resembles a camel's neck.

Driving the surrounding sandy dunes by 4WD is highly enjoyable though not for the faint of heart!

The filming location of Star Wars Episode I & II is a treat to visit if you’re an enthousiast.

Lézard Rouge
Transfer from Tozeur to Metlaoui (45Km/35mn drive) for an excursion on the former bey of Tunis’ train, the "LEZARD ROUGE”. Beautifully restored and finely appointed, this train will take you though the breathtaking scenery of the Selja Gorge. These magnificent canyons are otherwise inaccessible. Two short stops on the way allow for memorable photography. Guests are served drinks as the train ambles through this unique landscape.

Chott El Jerid
The Chott El Jerid, a fascinating salt lake covering almost 5000 sq. km, is located 45mn from Tozeur. From the narrow road through the dried lake, you are nearly certain to see the famous mirages of the Sahara. On either side of the causeway the sparkling salt crust extends far into the distance. Far from uniform, the Chott is continuously changing landscape. After 14km the Chott becomes sandy and 32kms later, you reach the first of the hundreds of thousands of palms.
