Gabes is a popular gateway to the South, though there aren’t as many cruise Ships docking there as in Tunis - La Goulette for instance. Matmata is an extraordinary site, unlike any ancient site you are likely to visit. It was used as the scenery for several of the Star Wars movies. Many of the desert scenes of the Star War movies Phantom Menace and The Attack of the Clones and the original Star Wars were filmed in Tunisia. The desert dwellings in the ground were in fact the Tunisian’s Troglodyte homes in the Village if Matmata. For all the Star Wars fans remembering the Pod race in desert they conjure up images of deserts and cliffs. You will have the opportunity of visiting one of the homes and perhaps be invited to share a glass of tea with the locals, who are welcoming people. After this exciting visit, drive back to visit Gabes oasis and the famous spice market. Stock up on spices you would not find at home before heading back for port.
